Developing the power to change the status quo is not easy. It is born out of fascination with physiological processes. This leads to discovery and from discovery comes innovation. Everyone at AB Vista shares that fascination — it is why we go to work and it drives everything we do. Since we were formed in , AB Vista has grown to be one of the largest suppliers of enzymes, yeast and natural betaine to the global animal nutrition industry.

As a global business, AB Vista is acutely aware of our position in society and the impact we can have on the world in which we operate. Our approach to corporate and social responsibility is guided by the principles of our parent company, Associated British Foods, namely responsibility for the stewardship of our environment, our people, our neighbours and for promoting good health.

Furthermore, our own sustainability programme, "Formula 24", focusses on the following objectives:. Under the banner More from Less, our priority is to improve customer efficiency.

From savings on feed costs to improvements in milk production, all of our products and services aim to maximise return on investment for the people with whom we work. To ensure our customers are getting the best from our two flagship enzyme products — Quantum Blue and Econase XT — we use a holo-analysis system enabling us to capture all relevant data and provide recommendations for efficient use of our products.

These recommendations can range from the level of fat supplemented in the feed, to the confirmation of our nutrient matrices, building customer confidence in the products. Furthermore our Formula 24 Feed Safety Group is committed to finding ways to build ever greater assurance for our customers and partners. Our approach is to benchmark the management and monitoring of our supply chain, our sites and our systems and procedures. Working with customers, supply chains and trade assurance schemes, we continually seek to extend our knowledge and capability to better anticipate and plan for the future.

Running a successful lab usually generates a growing amount of waste — as we found at ESC, our lab in Wales. However, the team was determined to reverse this trend and over the last 12 months have implemented a number of recycling initiatives which now sees plastic labware and feed samples recycled alongside the standard paper, glass and cans.

We encourage our offices to develop ties with local schools and colleges to help promote agriculture as a career option — whilst at the same time getting more involved with the community.

This local support extends further still with many of our employees taking part in a range of community volunteer and sponsorship programmes in their regions. At AB Vista we are keen for our larger offices to develop links with local schools and colleges so we can help promote agriculture as a career option whilst getting more involved with the local community.

ESC in Wales has links with Bridgend College and has supported short term work placements and a longer term industry placement, as well as giving talks on enzyme assays at the College. Our Marlborough office has teamed up with local secondary school St Johns, and is involved in their career fairs, mock interviews, career talks and annual Science Week.

Our employee Trisha coaches the team and we are also one of their sponsors for the current season. And when Hurricane Irma hit the East coast of the United States in September , the team in our lab in Plantation, Florida, volunteered to join the relief effort, sorting out food donated for the shelters.

Bringing together experts in animal nutrition to further our knowledge and understanding of the anti-nutritional factors of phytate and identify advances in diet formulation to combat the anti-nutritional effect of phytate. Another difference to oilseeds is that, like fish oil production, the processing of animal by-products always includes a thermal processing melting step; cold processing is not possible. There are two general categories of animal fats: edible and inedible. Furthermore, the European Union categorised the inedible fats in three different risk categories. The collection and treatment of these fats are often in the portfolio of the renderers' business, rather than in that of the vegetable oil producers. Despite the fact that milk and milk products and fish and fish by-products are also animal by-products, their processing will be dealt with in a separate chapter. The history of rendering can be approached from different angles. Since Roman times the art of soap making from ash and rendered fat has been well known. Other applications for animal fats, such as candle making from cattle and sheep tallow, came later.

The food industry is a complex, global collective of diverse businesses that supplies most of the food consumed by the world's population. It is challenging to find an inclusive way to cover all aspects of food production and sale. Most food produced for the food industry comes from commodity crops using conventional agricultural practices.

We offer pioneering products and technical services to the animal feed industry. AB Vista is now one of the largest suppliers of yeast and natural betaine to the global animal nutrition industry. The company invests heavily in research and development and has a growing portfolio of products and services spanning the poultry, swine, ruminant and aquaculture sectors.

If even more land and more natural resources are dedicated to food production, this will have devastating consequences for the Earth's remaining biodiversity. Achieving higher yields from the same land area without severely impacting the environment requires a new way of approaching food production, that is a sustainable intensification, which implies a major improvement in recycling available resources and waste. At present, the increasing use of arable land for the production of bioenergy plants, rather than crop plants, is leading to a serious reduction in available land for food production worldwide. The land used for soya production by just the three major global producers Brazil, the USA and Argentina is about 90 million hectares.
